Let your hearing aids perform their best. Proper fittings and maintenance will keep them in optimum shape—in order for you to keep on enjoying their results.
Hearing Aid Fittings and Programming
Hearing is a complex and wondrous process. But once hearing loss occurs, it can take some time to regain the ability to hear lost sounds again. Unlike wearing glasses to help with poor eyesight, wearing hearing aids to help with hearing loss requires an acclimation phase to get used to your new instruments.
During your fitting, your hearing aid will be programmed to meet your needs, and you’ll be given instructions on how to insert and remove the device, as well as how to change the batteries and clean them. We’ll also review your expectations of your new device and go over how it will work in your day-to-day life. Sometimes the fitting process can be completed on the first try, yet other times it might require a few follow-up visits to ensure your hearing aids are working well.
You are encouraged to begin wearing your new hearing aids as soon as you’ve purchased them. But beware: things will sound a bit odd at first. It takes some time for your brain to relearn how to process various long-lost sounds. It helps to begin slowly and gradually increase the amount of time that you wear your hearing aids each day in that first week of owning them. We will schedule regular follow-up appointments during your adjustment phase to check in on your progress. We will clean your hearing aids to keep them in good condition, and make any adjustments needed to help you hear clearly. In between these appointments, we are just a phone call away and encourage our patients to contact us with any questions or concerns they may have.
Take the slow and steady approach to adjusting to your new hearing aids. If you encounter situations where you still are not hearing well, write down what happened and let us know so we can make adjustments to your devices. Most importantly, be patient. The time it takes to get your devices dialed in and working perfectly for you is worth the few visits it might require.
